Hey CNC woodworkers! This is the “butterfly bowl” – something unique that cannot be created on a standard wood lathe. I think it turned out gorgeous! This project has involved a lot of experimentation, but built on my previous techniques for making other bowls on my CNC. I currently have a flock of four butterfly bowls, and it is growing every few days. Eventually some are going to fly off to their forever homes.
SUBSCRIBE, HIT THE BELL, and COMMENT! I want to hear from you all. It encourages me to make more videos.
Two of the bowls are made out of a sandwich of the following woods: cherry on bottom, purple epoxy, California madrone, blue epoxy, and then cherry on top. The third is pure madrone, giving it a more pink hue. I only show the casting of the first bowl; I’ll detail the technique for casting the other two bowls in a later video (a link will be added here, but subscribe to see it!). I also have some more in progress!
It started off in Illustrator designing the basic butterfly shape. I then created the 3D shape of the bowl in Fusion 360 by using the Form tool. I used Fusion for both the CAD and CAM work. It was machined on my Tormach PCNC 1100 milling machine primarily using two bits; one 3/8″ bit for roughing, and a 1/4″ ball end mill for the finishing operation. I did also use a large bit for flatting the top, but this could have been done with the 3/8″ bit; just a bit slower.
The time lapse is my favorite part of this video! Be sure to watch it.

I gave away one of these butterfly bowls as a subscriber contest! The contest is now over. A winner is announced in the next video for the Ink and Oak bowl: https://youtu.be/tNNTFJzXD3E
