Demonstrates method for modifying your DYI Laser CNC machine to provide accurate and detailed laser engraving of round pen blanks or other small turned projects. The machine modified is the SainSmart 3018 Pro CNC equipped with the 5.5 watt blue laser. My CNC machine has previously been upgraded to include limit switches for the X, Y and Z axis and Wire Carrier Cable Drag Chain. I also upgraded the wiring to the router mount to include a ready connection for the laser head so that changing from router to laser or vice versa would be a simple task. In all, the cost of the upgrade was less than $25 but I already had the threaded rod, Spring and necessary screws and other hardware to complete the task.
This approach is applicable to many of the DYI CNC Laser machines out today and all it takes is a little bit of adjustment in making use of the timing belt approach for pen rotation.
